Why can I not edit my document in Office 365?

When I try to edit a document in Office 365 it will not allow me to edit it. Why not?
If, at the top of the browser window you have something that looks like this (see below image), you will not be able to edit the document, because it is in a view only mode.
However if you see this (see image below) you will be able to edit the document.
